Welcome to Country

Welcome to Country€™ allows Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) custodians / traditional owner the opportunity to formally welcome people to our land. This is done as a ceremony or an oral welcome, by an Elder or appropriate nominated person as a GLaWAC representative. A €˜Welcome to Country€™ changes depending on the type of function, the location, the agreements made and the protocols of everybody involved.

€˜Welcome to Country€™ is recommended for large public events (eg. state-wide events and conferences). It may involve ceremonies of dance, smoke and / or song to bless the event and welcome participants. Larger €˜Welcome to Country€™ ceremonies should be negotiated with GLaWAC as part of the event. At times communities may also wish to ceremonially close the event to thank the participants and protect the land for future meetings.

In this region, Traditional Owners are represented by GLaWAC; we represent all those people recognised as Traditional Owners under the Native Title Consent Determination, from the Brabralung, Brataualung, Brayakaulung, Krauatungalung and Tatungalung people.
