250 years late, but more urgent than ever, this book reveals what First Nations people saw and felt as James Cook navigated these shores in 1770. While European accounts through diaries, journals, and letters have been widely told, Warra Warra Wai offers the other side of the story.

Who were the people watching the Endeavour sail by? How did they perceive their world, and what sense did they make of this strange new presence? What followed in the wake of these first encounters?

Darren Rix (a Gunditjmara-GunaiKurnai man, broadcaster, and nephew of Archie Roach) and his co-author Craig Cormick journeyed to the places along the east coast renamed by Cook. They listened to the stories passed down through generations—stories of people, lands, and names that long predated Cook’s arrival. With permission, these stories are interwoven with European accounts, offering a deeper, more complex understanding of this historical moment.
