How you can help progress Treaty in Victoria
11 April 2019
GLaWAC received a recent update from Jill Gallagher AO, Victorian Treaty Advancement Commissioner about how we can help progress Treaty negotiations.
The First Peoples™ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly) will soon be established and Aboriginal people and the state will be working toward establishing the Treaty Negotiating Framework by the end of 2019. This is one of the only moments, since colonisation, a government in Australia is willing to negotiate Treaty.
As a formally recognised Traditional Owner group, GLaWAC is guaranteed at least one seat on the Assembly. In addition to this seat, individual members of the Gunaikurnai community who meet general eligibility requirements, can also enrol and vote, and nominate for the generally elected seats. Further information including relevant enrolment, voting and nomination forms will be available at GLaWAC shortly.
Important dates to note:
May 10: Enrolment opens
May 27: Candidate nominations open
June (date TBC): Candidate nominations close
July 8: Voting opens
July 21: Voting closes
August (date TBC): Voting results released
