Bush Cafe and Aboriginal Art Gallery to put Kalimna West on the map

18 October 2019

GLaWAC’s Bush Cafe is open for business! Come and experience our culture.

The Bush Café, at GLaWAC’s corporate headquarters in Kalimna West, is our latest initiative to promote Gunaikurnai culture and Indigenous food as well as provide employment and education opportunities for Gunaikurnai people. The Aboriginal Art Gallery is also open for viewing.

Under Head Chef, Kevin Murray, a proud Gunaikurnai man, and with the support of local staff, James Mullett and Bradley Helmers, the Bush Café will be open Monday to Friday from 9.30 am – 3.00 pm for breakfast, morning and afternoon tea and lunch, offering fresh, local produce featuring bush tucker and Indigenous flavours. The cafe seats up to 40 people.

GLaWAC CEO, Roger Fenwick said that the Bush Café is an exciting commercial enterprise undertaken by GLaWAC as providing opportunities for Gunaikurnai people to have access to employment and on-the-job training in the hospitality sector.

“GLaWAC is very fortunate to have secured Kevin Murray as the Bush Café’s Head Chef. Kevin has over 25 years’ experience in hospitality completing his Chef’s apprenticeship at the former Orbost and District Hospital and running his own successful café in Orbost. As a Gunaikurnai man, he is bringing his extensive cultural knowledge as well as his work experience to the table,” Roger said.

Head Chef Kevin Murray said the Bush Café will introduce people to the Indigenous flavours that his ancestors experienced in the past by bringing those flavours to modern tastes.
“Everybody has to eat, and my ancestors had healthy diets and thrived by eating fresh meat and fish, cooked simply using Indigenous flavours from plants and spices such as Salt Bush, Mountain Pepper, Wattleseed and Bush Tomatoes,” Kevin said.

“My passion is to bring Bush Tucker to the table and encourage people to try something different and eat healthy foods, while building a team that can work front of house with our customers as well as back of house in the kitchen learning how to run a commercial hospitality business.”

The Bush Café will also cater for in-house meetings and events held at GLaWAC. The corporate headquarters at Forestec, Kalimna West has two Boardrooms that can seat up to 20 and 15 people as well as an Auditorium that seats up to 80 people. The three rooms have audio visual equipment and screens. Room hire and catering costs apply. For bookings contact GLaWAC Reception on (03) 5152 5100 or email reception@glawac.com.au
