Towera Crew Conducts GLaWAC Burn Along Uncles Road

26 March 2026

GLaWAC On Country Ranger Bryce Baxter, part of our Towera crew, conducts a planned burn in Colquhuon State Forest on Monday.

On Country Fire occurs with the right fire in the right time, the right way, and in the right place.

Our Towera (fire) crew conducted a burn near our Kalimna West campus in Colquhuon State Forest earlier this week, utilising the cultural practices of putting fire back into Country which our people have used for many generations.

After some light drizzle a few days prior followed by stable weather conditions, the time was right for our Towera crew to introduce fire into the landscape, creating a mosaic of burnt and unburnt areas.

This provided critters with areas of refuge, while also promoting new growth.

These GLaWAC burns are becoming a more regular part of not only GLaWAC’s work to heal and protect Country, but also land management strategy more broadly, as government agencies increasingly acknowledge our people’s understanding of fire and Country, knowledge gained from thousands of years of observation and practice.

It was deadly to have DEECA’s Cultural Fire Officers Kobi and Chris working alongside our Towera crew at this burn.

We appreciate the respectful and mutually beneficial relationships with our partners in land management that are growing and strengthening.
