Girls on Fire!

7 April 2025

In March, proud young Indigenous girls came together in Rawson for an unforgettable two-day adventure with GLaWAC’s Girls on Fire program. In a culturally strong and safe space, they rose to every single challenge, built confidence, and backed each other every step of the way.

Just look at the joy, excitement and pride in these photos! The girls worked in teams, learning how fire moves and behaves, managing hoses and radios, and experiencing the thrill of riding in fire trucks and unimogs. A standout moment was getting hands-on with SES rescue equipment – cutting up a wrecked car (and keeping a piece as a hard-earned memento!). Every part of each day was about pushing boundaries, growing leadership skills, and learning how to stay strong under pressure. The team spirit was incredible!

Surrounded by mob, they yarned, created art, and shared stories. They also connected with inspiring young women making their mark in firefighting, emergency services, and beyond – opening doors to future careers and new possibilities. By the end, plenty were thinking big and looking ahead to the bright futures that awaited them, proving that nothing can stop a Gunaikurnai girl with a dream.

A huge thanks to the Latrobe Valley community, Girls on Fire Australia, SES, CFA, FFMVic, Ambulance Victoria, NAB, and everyone who helped make it happen!
