Nation Building Field Trip

Monday 12th December - Tuesday 13th December

As part of nation-building efforts to make sure community members are ready for Treaty talks, GLaWAC invites you on an overnight field trip to the Public Records Office of Victoria (PROV) to research your family history.

Staff from the Koori Records Unit will support community to search the records held at PROV and the National Archives of Australia in a private and culturally safe space.

This is a free event, with all accommodation, travel and meals are provided.

WHEN: Monday 12th December (leaving in the afternoon) – Tuesday 13th December (returning in the evening).

Participants will be travelling by private bus (Dysons) to Melbourne.

Pick-up locations include Bairnsdale, Stratford, Sale, Morwell and Traralgon, as required. Toilet facilities will be available at all of these stops.

That is up to you, there are options for single and double rooms available.

Yes, as long as you book in early as places are limited.

Dinner will be on the bus or at the Service Centre in Officer.
Breakfast will be in Fitzroy close to accommodation, lunch will be provided at PROV, and we will return to the Officer Service Centre for dinner on the way home.
Water and snacks will be provided for both trips.

If you are feeling unwell ahead of departure, please stay at home. Otherwise, we will have qualified first-aiders on the bus for support. Please remember to pack any medications you may need for an overnight stay away from home.

Please note that there is usually a lot of emotion experienced when accessing family records. The language of these historic documents is typically offensive and racist. This was the standard language in use at the time the documents were created. Staff from the PROV Koorie Records Unit will be on hand to support attendees.

You are allowed to take photographs of the records using your phone. If you would like photocopies, you must make a request to PROV or NAA and there will be a time delay but there is no cost involved.
