Our connection runs deep
17 April 2025

For too long, water from Country has been tied up in systems that excluded us. Now things are changing.
The Victorian Government has announced the reallocation of 16 billion litres of water from the Latrobe River, once set aside for the coal-fired power industry.
It’s now been shared evenly, split three ways between the environment, the agriculture sector, and us, the Gunaikurnai people.
We now manage 5.3 billion litres, roughly 2,120 olympic swimming pools of water.
But it’s not just water—it’s recognition. It’s responsibility. And it’s a step forward on our terms.
Water has always been part of Country. We looked after it, as we did with the land, for countless generations. But when Native Title came in, water was left out. Decoupled. Even as we were recognised as First Peoples, the right to care for water was kept out of reach.
With allocations on the Mitchell and Tambo Rivers, Buchan groundwater and now the Latrobe River, we’re living the change.
As our Chair, Troy McDonald reckons, “water is more than a resource; it’s a pathway to healing and a stronger future for our people.”
This allocation affirms what we’ve always known: our connection to water runs deep. It shapes our culture, identity, and how we care for Country.
It also affirms our right to make decisions about how water is used. Whether that’s restoring wetlands, supporting community needs, or building new economic opportunities, we’ll decide, because this water is now in Gunaikurnai hands.
“This announcement opens the door to practical, culturally grounded approaches that support healthy waterways, community aspirations, and strong links to regional growth.”
This water allocation reaffirms our journey to self-determination and Gunaikurnai nation building. So, we’re stepping into this space with clarity, care, and a deep understanding of what’s at stake. And what’s possible.
This isn’t just good for us, it’s good for Gippsland. A fair split means the land, the people, and the rivers can all move forward together. It’s about balance. It’s about trust.
And we look forward to yarning more with our members about water for a long time to come.
